A high number of New Yorkers suffered from at least one disability in 2015.

- The overall percentage of individuals with a disability in New York was 11.3%.

- In other words, 2,222,100 of the 19,580,400 New Yorkers of all ages reported at least one disability.

- 9.0% of New Yorkers aged 21 to 64 years had a disability.

- In other words, 1,055,800 of the 11,699,400 working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) reported at least one disability.

- 22.7% of New Yorkers aged 65 to 74 years had a disability.

- In other words, 372,600 of the 1,643,700 New Yorkers aged 65 to 74 reported at least one disability.

Disability By Type In New York

New Yorkers suffered from a broad range of disabilities with “ambulatory disability” being the most prevalent type in 2015.

- 2.0% of disabled New Yorkers among all ages reported a visual disability (serious difficulty seeing).

- 2.7% of disabled New Yorkers among all ages reported a hearing disability (serious difficulty hearing).

- 6.7% of disabled New Yorkers among all ages reported an ambulatory disability (serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs).

- 4.4% of disabled New Yorkers among all ages reported a cognitive disability (serious difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions).

- 2.7% of disabled New Yorkers among all ages reported a self-care disability (difficulty dressing or bathing).

- Lastly, 5.3% of disabled New Yorkers among all ages reported and independent living disability (difficulty doing errands alone).

Disability By Gender In New York

Disability was more common among women than men in 2015.

- The overall percentage of males in New York with a disability was 10.8%.

- In other words, 1,024,9000 of the 9,483,00 male New Yorkers reported at least one disability.

- The overall percentage of females with a disability in New York was 11.9%.

- In other words, 1,197,200 of the 10,097,400 female New Yorkers reported at least one disability.

Employment with A Disability In New York

Unemployment was far more common among New Yorkers with a disability than those without one in 2015.

- The employment rate of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) with disabilities was 33.4%.

- The employment rate of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) without a disability was 77.6%.

- 20.5% of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) with a disability were working full-time/full-year.

- 7.8% of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) with a disability were not working, but were actively looking for work.

Earnings With A Disability In New York

New Yorkers working full-time with a disability earned substantially less than New Yorkers working full-time without a disability in 2015.

- The median annual earnings of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) working full-time/full-year with a disability was $42,100.

- The median annual earnings of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) working full-time/full-year without a disability was $50,100.

- In other words, the difference in the median earnings between working-age people with and without disabilities working full-time/full-year was $8,000.

- Among the disability types identified, the highest annual earnings were among New Yorkers with a hearing disability ($50,100).

- The lowest annual earnings were for New Yorkers with a cognitive disability ($35,000).

Poverty Rate With Disability In New York

The poverty rate was substantially higher for New Yorkers with a disability than those without one in 2015.

- The poverty rate of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) with a disability was 30.1%.

- Notably, the poverty rate of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) without a disability was 11.9%.

Health Insurance Coverage for Disabled New Yorkers

More working-age New Yorkers with a disability had health insurance than working-age New Yorkers without a disability in 2015.

- 94.0% of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) with a disability had health insurance coverage.

- 89.4% of working-age New Yorkers (21 to 64) without a disability had health insurance coverage.

- In other words, the difference in the health insurance coverage rate between working-age New Yorkers with and without disabilities was 4.6 percentage points.

- The highest health insurance coverage rate was for New Yorkers with a self-care disability (95.7%).

- Meanwhile, the lowest health insurance coverage rate was for New Yorkers with a visual disability (92.2 percent).
